Living in Hokkaido, Japan, I feel a mystical connection with the landscape in that people have been seeing the same trees, mountains, and skies from the beginning of our existence. I think people have always felt beauty and harshness in nature. I am searching for the image that contains that feeling as we are experiencing it now and I hope my paintings can communicate the feelings of people of the past and future as well.
I have been painting the Hokkaido landscape for the last several years. My work is based on direct observation and memory and I often include farms, houses, people, and animals. I am particularly interested in humans and animals together in nature, because when we are in harmony there is poetry. It is my life long search to express that poetry in my paintings. I hope we can all eventually live together In peace and harmony.
